Abstract
Keyword: the old man and the sea, character, and plot. Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American author and journalist. In 1951, Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea, which would become perhaps his most famous book, finally winning him the Pulitzer Prize he h ad long been denied. This research is focused in analyzing the characterization and the life struggle of the main character through the plot. This study uses the sources from the old man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway and also from several books about Literature such as character and characterization, types of character, plot and also structure of plot. The researcher uses qualitative research by describing the events that occur in the story because this study wants to analyze the life struggle of the main character through the plot. After gets enough the data and the relevant theory, Then this research present the data analysis. And continues with analysis of the life struggle of the main character and the plot of the old man and the sea by ernest hemingway to answer the problem statement. And for the last part of this study presents the result of the analysis and also the conclusion.
