Abstract

Key words: Characterization, Conflict, Qualitative Method, Short story. This research intent on characterization and conflict. This research used qualitative method. The result of the research of the first story is “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”. The mayor character of this story is static and has a big internal conflict and bad relation with other people. And the second story is James Joyce’s “The Eveline”. This story has a mayor character, Eveline as a dynamic character. Also has internal conflict and bad relation with other people. Conflict is necessary to every story. In short story, there is usually one major conflict. Because of the simmilarity and dissimilary from some short story still rarely to be analysis, therefore the researcher chooses James Thurber’s the Secret Life od Walter Mitty and James Joyce’s the Eveline Edgar to analysis. And all of the short story contains of characterization and conflict. From this research the researcher conclude that, both of the story have smilarity and dissimilarity. The simmilarty is both of character have internal confict and try to escape. And the dissimilarity is apperently in characterization. Walter mitty is static, but characterization of Eveline is dynamic.
