Abstract
Keyword: Character, literature, plot, short story. This thesis is entitled THE ROLE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER’S CONFLICTS IN SHAPING THE PLOT IN ANTON CHEKHOV’S FAT AND THIN. The story contains problems appearing within the actions that make the character struggle to overcome the problems. Therefore, the writer utilizes the characteristic of the main character and is supported by the plot to find out the influence the character’s conflicts towards the plot in the play. The short story Fat and Thin is written by Anton Chekhov. Chekhov chosen because he grew to become one of the greatest short-story writers and playwrights known in world literature. His most famous plays include The Three Sisters (1901) and The Cherry Orchard (1904), the latter becoming a classic of modern drama. The purpose of analyzing characteristics especially characters and plot will offer some contribution to the study of literature in general and prose in special.
