Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyze Rose’s utterances in the movie entitled Titanic. This research takes the data from the dialogue between Rose and Jack and between Rose and Cal. The data are taken from the dialogue in the script of Titanic that show Rose’s feeling, happy and sad. This research tries to answer four statements of the problem; (1) to identify the illocutionary acts of Rose’s utterances; (2) to describe Rose’s intended meaning; (3) to describe the way Rose uses the illocutionary acts; (4) to describe the reasons why Rose uses the illocutionary acts. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative. Because this research tries to find the intended meaning of Rose’s utterances, this research uses the theory of speech acts proposed by Austin and Searle. Theory of happiness and sadness are also used to show the state of psychology of Rose’s emotion. After analyzing this research, there are some findings. Rose uses four types of illocutionary acts. They are expressives, representatives, directives, and commissives. Rose mostly uses expressives type. The way Rose uses the illocutionary acts is in the form of declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentence. Rose mostly uses declarative sentence. The reasons why Rose uses illocutionary acts are influenced by her feeling, happy or sad. So, it can be concluded that Rose is a type of emotional woman who often uses her feelings to communicate with other people. Based on the findings, it can be said that by using speech acts theory, the intended meaning of people’s utterance can be found. Keywords: speech acts, psychology, illocutionary acts
