Abstract

Background: Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that cannot be completely cured and has an
impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). If not controlled properly, it can cause various acute and chronic
complications. The amount of family support has a direct impact on DM management, thus affecting quality of life.
One solution in dealing with this phenomenon is to conduct educational activities for sufferers that can change
behavior and prevent complications, so that the quality of life of sufferers can be maintained through diabetes self-
management education (DSME).
Purpose: To determine the effect of diabetes self-management education (DSME) on quality of life and family
support in patients with type II DM.
Method: This type of research is a quasi-experimental quantitative research with pre-test and post-test diabetes
self-management education (DSME). Participants in this study were DM patients and/or their families at the
Mulyorejo Health Center obtained through purposive sampling technique with the Lemeshow formula and obtained
a sample size of 32 participants. One of the measuring instruments to assess the quality of life variable is using the
Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire and the data analysis used was univariate and bivariate.
Results: The pre-test variable of the participants' quality of life was 47.53, after being given DSME the average
was 60.97 with a p-value of 0.000. The family support variable also increased, when the pre-test was conducted
the average was 23.22. However, when the post-test was conducted the average was 34.28 with a p-value of 0.000.
Conclusion: There is an effect of DSME on the quality of life and family support in type II DM patients, indicated
by an increase in the average score after the intervention and a p-value of <0.05 was obtained.
