Abstract

Background: Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important indicator for assessing the nutritional status of breast cancer patients, particularly during chemotherapy. Chemotherapy may influence body weight through physiological and pharmacological mechanisms, including corticosteroid use and metabolic disruption. However, limited studies in Indonesia have specifically examined the relationship between chemotherapy and changes in BMI.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between chemotherapy and body mass index among breast cancer patients at Dr. Soewandhie General Hospital, Surabaya.
Methods: This was a quantitative analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 breast cancer patients were grouped into chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy categories. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test to examine the relationship between chemotherapy status and BMI category.
Results: Most chemotherapy patients had a normal BMI (43.8%), with the highest age range being 46–55 years. Spearman's test showed a significant positive correlation between chemotherapy and BMI in breast cancer patients ( = 0.532; p = 0.034).
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between chemotherapy and the BMI of breast cancer patients. These findings emphasize the importance of nutritional monitoring during chemotherapy to support treatment success and prevent nutritional disorders.
