Abstract

Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui hubungan paparan asap rokok dengan gejala rinitis alergi berdasarkan Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR).

Background: Allergic rhinitis is a hypersensitivity reaction mediated by immunoglobulin E due to exposure allergens resulting in inflammation with symptoms such as nasal congestion, itchy nose, runny nose, and sneezing. One of the risk factors of allergic rhinitis is exposure cigarette smoke because cigarette smoke contains many compounds that can trigger allergic responses. Objective: To determine the relationship between exposure cigarette smoke and allergic rhinitis symptoms based on the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR). Methods: This study used a cross-sectional method with the population is patients of the ENT-KL polyclinic of Siti Khodijah Muhammadiyah Sepanjang Hospital. In sampling, this study used a simple random sampling method on a population that met the inclusion criteria, namely being willing to participate in thr study and being over 18 years old, while the exclusion criteria were having history of ARI and not filling out the questionnaire completely. Cigarette smoke exposure was assessed using a cigarette smoke history questionnaire and allergic rhinitis symptoms were assessed using the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi Square test with SPSS version 26 application. Result: The study involved 60 respondents with 60,0% being female and 40,0% being male. The history of cigarette smoke exposure showed that 65,0% were passive smokers, 25,0% were non smokers, and 10,0% were active smokers. The average SFAR value for assessing allergic rhinitis symptoms was 3,28. The results of statistical test showed a significant relationship between cigarette smoke exposure and symptoms of runny nose and itchy nose without flu symptoms (p=0,001<0,05). While the result of the next statistical test showed no significant relationship between cigarette smoke exposure and symptoms of allergic rhinitis based on the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) (p=0,318>0,05). Conclusion: Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that exposure cigarette smoke has a significant relationship with one of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis but does not cause allergic rhinitis.
