Abstract

Introduction: Indices of obesity tended to change over time, and there was increasing evidence that dietary and physical activity interventions played a significant role in reducing the severity of somatic and autonomic neuropathy.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and physical activity with the incidence of diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Siti Khodijah Sepanjang Hospital.
Methods: The research was quantitative with an analytical observational design using a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Siti Khodijah Hospital Sepanjang in 2024 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, selected using consecutive random sampling. The research instruments included a weight and height measurement scale, as well as the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI).
Results: The study results showed that the majority of patients had an abnormal BMI, with 31 patients (56.4%), and a light level of physical activity, with 24 patients (43.6%). The Chi-Square test analysis showed a significance value of 0.002 (p<0.05) for the relationship between BMI and diabetic neuropathy, and 0.001 (p<0.05) for the relationship between physical activity and neuropathy, indicating a significant relationship between BMI, physical activity, and the incidence of diabetic neuropathy. The contingency coefficients obtained from the analysis of BMI and physical activity were 0.461 and 0.450, respectively. This indicated a moderately strong relationship between BMI, physical activity, and diabetic neuropathy, with correlation strength in the range of 0.4-0.7. Logistic regression analysis showed that physical activity, with an analysis result of 8.167, had a greater influence on the incidence of diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients compared to Body Mass Index (BMI), which had a result of 5.530.
Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and physical activity with the incidence of diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Siti Khodijah Hospital Sepanjang.
