Abstract

Background: Sepsis is one of the major medical emergencies with a high mortality rate. Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is a simple parameter that can evaluate systemic inflammation and is associated with unfavourable clinical prognosis in sepsis patients. However, the results of previous studies are still varied. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between NLR and the severity of sepsis in the ICU of Siti Khodijah Muhammadiyah Hospital Sepanjang. Methods: The study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The subjects of this study were sepsis patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit of Siti Khodijah Sepanjang Hospital and met the inclusion criteria, namely 32 people. Spearman correlation test was used to assess the relationship between NLR and the severity of sepsis. Results: Most of the 12 people (37.5%) who experienced sepsis had NLR in the severe category. The majority of the study subjects (56.3%) had sepsis with high clinical risk. The correlation test results obtained a significance value of 0.541 (p> 0.05) indicating that there is no significant relationship between NLR and sepsis severity. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between NLR and the severity of sepsis in the ICU of Siti Khodijah Muhammadiyah Hospital Sepanjang.
