Abstract

Komposit serat alam merupakan material alternatif yang ramah lingkungan dan memiliki potensi untuk dikembangkan sebagai bahan teknik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan membandingkan sifat mekanik berupa kekuatan tarik dan ketangguhan impak pada material komposit berbasis resin poliester dengan penguat serat pisang, serat kelapa, dan campuran serat pisang–serat kelapa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimental dengan melakukan uji tarik dan uji impak pada masing-masing variasi material komposit. Uji tarik dilakukan untuk memperoleh nilai gaya maksimum, tegangan tarik, modulus Young, dan regangan, sedangkan uji impak dilakukan untuk mengetahui ketangguhan impak material.

Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa komposit serat campuran pisang–kelapa memiliki nilai kekuatan tarik rata-rata tertinggi sebesar 26,03 N/mm² dan modulus Young sebesar 362,79 N/mm², yang mengindikasikan peningkatan kekakuan material akibat kombinasi dua jenis serat. Sementara itu, komposit serat kelapa menunjukkan nilai ketangguhan impak tertinggi sebesar 24,53 kJ/m², yang menandakan kemampuan penyerapan energi kejut yang lebih baik dibandingkan komposit serat pisang dan komposit campuran. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa sifat mekanik tarik dan impak pada komposit serat alam tidak selalu berbanding lurus, sehingga pemilihan jenis serat penguat perlu disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan aplikasi material.

Natural fiber composites are alternative materials that are environmentally friendly and have significant potential for development as engineering materials. This study aims to determine and compare the mechanical properties in terms of tensile strength and impact toughness of polyester resin–based composite materials reinforced with banana fiber, coconut coir fiber, and a hybrid combination of banana–coconut fibers. The research method used was an experimental method by conducting tensile and impact tests on each variation of the composite material. Tensile testing was carried out to obtain the maximum force, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and strain values, while impact testing was performed to determine the impact toughness of the material.

The test results show that the hybrid banana–coconut fiber composite exhibits the highest average tensile strength of 26.03 N/mm² and a Young’s modulus of 362.79 N/mm², indicating an increase in material stiffness due to the combination of two types of fibers. Meanwhile, the coconut coir fiber composite demonstrates the highest impact toughness value of 24.53 kJ/m², indicating a better ability to absorb impact energy compared to the banana fiber composite and the hybrid composite. Based on these results, it can be concluded that tensile and impact mechanical properties of natural fiber composites do not always increase proportionally. Therefore, the selection of reinforcing fiber types must be adjusted according to the specific application requirements of the material.
