Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. By 2030, it is projected to become the third leading cause of death, following cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Patients with COPD have a higher risk of developing Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Objective: This study aimed to determine the association between COPD patients classified according to the ABE assessment scheme and the incidence of GERD based on the GerdQ questionnaire. Methods: This was a quantitative analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted among 48 COPD patients at RSUD Haji Provinsi Jawa Timur, from November 28, 2025 to December 29, 2025, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and the GerdQ questionnaire. Results: The majority of respondents were male (66.7%), and most were aged ≥ 60 years (62.5%). Most respondents were classified in group E (58.3%). In this study, 60.4% of COPD patients were found to be GERD-positive. The Fisher–Freeman–Halton Exact Test showed a statistically significant association between COPD patients based on the ABE assessment scheme and the incidence of GERD based on the GerdQ questionnaire (p < 0.001). Conclusion: A significant association was observed between the COPD ABE classification and the presence of GERD. These findings highlight the potential importance of GERD screening in patients with COPD, particularly among those with more severe symptoms and frequent exacerbations, to facilitate earlier recognition and appropriate intervention.
