Abstract

Introduction: Work speed and work endurance are essential components of academic performance, particularly among medical students who are required to maintain concentration and productivity during demanding learning activities. Reduced work performance may negatively affect academic achievement. One promising non-pharmacological intervention is Lemon Myrtle essential oil aromatherapy, which contains citral, a bioactive compound with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties that may promote alertness and improve work performance.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of Lemon Myrtle essential oil aromatherapy on work speed and work endurance among medical students using the Kraepelin Test.
Methods: A quasi-experimental crossover study was conducted involving 34 medical students. Each participant received both Lemon Myrtle essential oil aromatherapy and control treatment according to the crossover sequence. Work speed and work endurance were assessed using the Kraepelin Test before and after each intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with a significance level of p<0.05.
Results: The findings demonstrated a significant difference in work speed and work endurance following the administration of Lemon Myrtle essential oil aromatherapy compared with the pre-intervention condition (p=0.001). Further analysis revealed significant improvements in work speed (p=0.001) and work endurance (p=0.035).
Conclusion: Lemon Myrtle essential oil aromatherapy significantly improved work speed and work endurance among medical students. Therefore, it may serve as a simple, safe, and effective non-pharmacological intervention to enhance academic work performance.
