Abstract

Introduction: Effective management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) depends heavily on the patient's ability to perform self-care independently. However, most patients do not yet have optimal self-care behaviors due to a lack of knowledge and self-efficacy. The low level of knowledge and self-efficacy of T2DM at Puskesmas (Community Health Center) Mojo presents a health challenge. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of WhatsApp Group-based Self-Care Education on the level of knowledge and self-efficacy in T2DM patients. Design: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The variables in this study were WhatsApp Group-based Self-Care Education and the level of knowledge and self-efficacy. The location of this study was in the working area of Mojo Community Health Center in Surabaya. Sampling used was a purposive sampling technique, and the sample amounted to 73 T2DM patients. The instrument used was DKQ for the level of knowledge and DMSES for WhatsApp Group-based self-efficacy. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed an increase of knowledge from 41.1% before education to 45.2% after education. Self-Efficacy was from 37.0% before education to 54.8% after education. Wilcoxon analysis with the characteristics of respondents aged 25-55 years showed a p-value <0.001 for both variables. Discussion: WhatsApp Group-based self-care education is a non-pharmacological intervention proven effective in increasing knowledge and self-efficacy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
