Abstract

Introduction: The increasing number of patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus, coupled with high rates of non-adherence to treatment, leads to poor glycemic control, thereby increasing the risk of macrovascular complications—such as peripheral artery disease, assessed using the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)—as well as microvascular complications in the form of vision impairment due to diabetic retinopathy. This study aims to analyze the relationship between treatment adherence and ABI and visual status in patients with Type II DM in Sedatigede Village Sidoarjo. Methods: This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach involving 64 respondents selected using total sampling. Research instruments included the MMAS-8 questionnaire, ABI testing, and visual status examinations. Results and Discussion: The results showed that a portion of the respondents had low medication adherence (38 respondents, 59.4%), normal ABI levels (31 respondents, 48.4%), and mild visual impairment (43 respondents, 67.2%). The results of the Gamma correlation test showed a significant relationship between medication adherence and ABI (p-value 0.021; r = 0.427). Additionally, the results of the Gamma correlation test showed a significant relationship between medication adherence and visual status (p-value 0.005; r = 0.601). Discussion: The study showed that the better the medication adherence, the more normal the ABI values and visual status.
