Abstract

Infections caused by Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) are a prevalent yet often overlooked public health issue. Sanitation workers constitute a vulnerable group due to work activities involving direct contact with soil or waste contaminated with parasite eggs, combined with low usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and poor personal hygiene. Fecal examinations are commonly performed using flotation and sedimentation methods. This study aimed to compare the results of fecal examinations from sanitation workers in South Surabaya using both flotation and sedimentation methods. The study employed the flotation method using a 33% ZnSO4 reagent and the sedimentation method using a 0.9% NaCl solution. This was a comparative analytic observational study utilizing 23 fecal samples from sanitation workers, with each sample subjected to both flotation and sedimentation procedures. Analysis of the 23 samples revealed 5 positive results (21.74%) for helminth eggs and 18 negative results (78.26%). The 33% ZnSO4 flotation method identified 4 positive samples (S2, S4, S5, S13), whereas the 0.9% NaCl sedimentation method identified 3 positive samples (S4, S5, S16). Statistical analysis using a data normality test and the Mann-Whitney test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.685 (p > 0.05); consequently, the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted. The conclusion of this study is that there is no statistically significant difference between the 33% ZnSO4 flotation method and the 0.9% NaCl sedimentation method in detecting the presence of STH (Soil- Transmitted Helminth) eggs in the stool samples of sanitation workers in South Surabaya. Both methods demonstrate comparable performance; therefore, the choice of method can be adapted to the availability of laboratory facilities.
