Abstract

This study aims to analyze and explain the form, function, and meaning of the characters' speech acts in Leila S. Chudori's novel "Laut Bercerita" (The Sea of Stories). This pragmatic research was conducted to fill a gap in contemporary Indonesian literary studies, particularly in understanding the characters' verbal interactions that underlie the narrative of struggle, political repression, and power relations. The method used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive approach through literature-based content analysis. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences of dialogue between characters were collected using reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The research's rationale utilizes concepts from the philosophy of science (ontology, epistemology, axiology) as well as Austin and Searle's theories of distinguishing between locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary forces. The results show that the characters' speech acts represent performative communication acts strongly influenced by the context of historical trauma and the socio-political conflicts of the New Order. In conclusion, the speech acts in this novel function beyond the aesthetic elements of fiction, but instead act as instruments of social awareness, discursive resistance, and a medium for preserving collective memory of human tragedy.
