Abstract

ABSTRACT
This community service aims at training primary school teachers to create short stories containing
multiculturalism values for children. The activity was conducted by partnering with three elementary schools
of Muhammadiyah, which were Elementary School of Muhammadiyah 8 of Surabaya, Elementary School of
Muhammadiyah 15 of Surabaya, and Elementary School of Muhammadiyah 18 of Surabaya. Each school
sent their representative teachers to join the workshop of creative writing on July 7–8, 2018. This workshop
was followed by 32 hour-private coaching sessions to review and revise the short stories written by the
teachers. The result of the training showed that this activity succeeded in increasing teachers’ understanding
of the importance of teaching multiculturalism through a short story for children as a way to cultivate
cultural literacy in primary school.
