Abstract

Keywords: Speech Acts, Characterization, Bridge to Terabithia. Speech acts deal with utterances and doing acts. There may be some actions behind the utterances those speakers in their conversation. In this research, the analysis is made of speech acts on the utterance of the characters from their conversation. The scope of this study is the conversation that the illocutionary acts found of Jess and leslie as the main characters. She uses some theories on speech acts as put forward by Goerge Yule and Jacob L. Mey. The researcher also uses internet in searching the file of novel the bridge to terabithia and the novel information as her data. The study uses descriptive qualitative method which observes persons or events in their natural setting with a purpose to understand the influence of a particular context on the events. some steps used to analyze this research. First, putting the utterances on the conversation and she describes the conversation is based on the context of situation to determine the illocutionary acts. Second, analyzing the data based on the locutionary acts to find out the illocutionary and perlocutionary acts. From those analysis of Jess’ character through his utterances which has 4 directives, 1commisive, 2 expressives and representatives and 1 declarative, indicate that Jess is soft, kind, sensitive and close minded person for directive, commisive , expressive and declarative acts. From his representative or giving statement, he is considered as an obedient and fanatical person. While the characterizations found in Leslie’s utterances indicates that she is ambitious, smart and open minded person for her directive, representative commisive and expressive acts. Besides that, she is also imaginative through her declarative act. This research is hoped can be a significance value for readers or students to study another kinds of speech acts with different sources such as drama, short story, dialogue or speech.
