Abstract

Language is a medium that people use to convey what is on their mind. In society, language is influenced by gender. Men and women tend to use language differently. In this study, researchers are interested in analyzing the types of women’s language by masculine women’s speech by Emmeline Pankhurst and Kamala Harris, based on the theory of Lakoff (2004) and Parab (2015). As well as researchers will examine the impact of their masculinity on the use of women's language based on Coates (2013) theory and also explain the differences and similarities between the women’s language features used by Emmeline Pankhurst and Kamala Harris. Researchers apply qualitative method in this research. In this research Emmeline Pankhurst and Kamala Harris used six features of women’s language used in their speeches. In Emmeline Pankhurst, hedges (20.2%), intensifiers (8.3%), hypercorrect grammar (45.2%), polite expressions (7.1%), rising intonation on declaratives (1.2%), adverbs and adjectives (17.9%), and avoidance expletives and tag questions (0%). In Kamala Harris, the features used are hedges (25.4%), intensifiers (1.8%), hypercorrect grammar (42.1%), polite expressions (19.3%), rising intonation on declarative (6, 1%), adverbs and adjectives (5.3%), and avoidance expletives and tag questions (0%). The results of the study show that the language used by Emmeline Pankhurst and Kamala Harris indicates politeness with women often using hypercorrect grammar and polite expressions in their sentences. In addition, the researcher also found that Emmeline Pankhurst and Kamala Harris still use women’s language features even though they have masculine features.
