Abstract

Background: Body Mass Index (BMI) is often used as a simple and quick indicator of body composition, while VO₂Max is the main parameter in assessing an athlete's aerobic capacity. This study aims to analyze the relationship between BMI and VO₂Max capacity in athletes who are members of KONI East Java. Methods: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 51 indoor and outdoor hockey athletes, selected through a simple random sampling method. Secondary data regarding BMI and VO₂Max were obtained from KONI medical records and analyzed using the Spearman correlation test with a significance level of 95% (p < 0.05). Results: The average BMI of athletes was in the normal category (22.46 kg/m²), and the average VO₂Max was 43.5 ml/kg/minute indicating moderate to good fitness. The results of the Spearman correlation test showed a correlation coefficient of -0.190 with a significance value of p = 0,182, indicating that there was no statistically significant relationship between BMI and VO₂Max. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between BMI and VO₂Max capacity in KONI East Java athletes. BMI is not a single indicator that can be used to predict aerobic capacity, considering the important role of other variables such as type of exercise, specific body composition, and genetic factors. It is recommended that athlete performance measurements in the future use a more comprehensive multidimensional approach.
