Abstract

This study explored the psychological development of Coraline as presented in Neil Gaiman's Coraline, through the lens of Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology. The study used a qualitative literary method to explore Coraline's internal conflict and resulting emotional responses and actions, by examining key narrative moments that revealed her growth. Coraline, as a dynamic character, underwent a transformation from early self-doubt—rooted in feelings of inferiority—toward courage and concern for the social world. This was analyzed using Adler’s five-stage process: feelings of inferiority, compensation, striving for superiority, style of life (private logic), and social interest (Gemeinschaftsgefühl). Coraline's journey from a restless, neglected child to a dynamic heroine was shown through her growing psychological strength. The study concluded that her path illustrated Adlerian principles, showing how striving turned into contribution, compensation became agency, and inferiority led to personal development.
