Abstract

Keris sebagai warisan budaya takbenda UNESCO memerlukan material dengan keseimbangan optimal antara kekuatan tarik dan keuletan. Penelitian ini mengkaji pengaruh variasi media pendinginan, yaitu air belerang, oli bekas, dan udara, terhadap sifat tarik baja ST42 setelah proses penempaan pada suhu 900°C. Pengujian tarik dilakukan di Laboratorium Teknik Mesin Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya menggunakan Universal Testing Machine (UTM) dengan nomor seri 032021001. Spesimen berupa bilah keris penuh dengan luas penampang 160 mm² dan panjang jarak jepit 300 mm. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa air belerang menghasilkan UTS tertinggi sebesar 38,89 kg/mm² (381,5 MPa) dengan elongasi 11%, diikuti oli bekas dengan UTS 33,15 kg/mm² (325,2 MPa) dan elongasi 11%, serta udara dengan UTS 28,69 kg/mm² (281,5 MPa) dan elongasi 15%. Peningkatan UTS relatif terhadap pendinginan udara mencapai 35,5% untuk air belerang dan 15,5% untuk oli bekas. Pola ini konsisten dengan mekanisme transformasi fasa diagram CCT, di mana laju pendinginan yang lebih tinggi mendorong pembentukan fasa martensit yang meningkatkan kekuatan tarik. Berdasarkan keseimbangan antara kekuatan tarik dan keuletan, air belerang direkomendasikan sebagai media pendinginan optimal untuk pembuatan keris berbahan baja ST42, sementara oli bekas merupakan alternatif ekonomis yang layak.

The keris, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, requires material with an optimal balance between tensile strength and ductility. This study investigates the effect of cooling media variation, namely sulfur water, used motor oil, and ambient air, on the tensile properties of ST42 steel after forging at 900°C. Tensile testing was conducted at the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM, serial no. 032021001). Specimens were full keris blades with a cross-sectional area of 160 mm² and a grip-to-grip length of 300 mm. Results show that sulfur water produced the highest UTS of 38.89 kg/mm² (381.5 MPa) with 11% elongation, followed by used oil at 33.15 kg/mm² (325.2 MPa) with 11% elongation, and air cooling at 28.69 kg/mm² (281.5 MPa) with 15% elongation. The UTS increase relative to air cooling reached 35.5% for sulfur water and 15.5% for used oil. This pattern is consistent with CCT diagram phase transformation mechanisms, where higher cooling rates promote martensite formation. Based on the balance between tensile strength and ductility, sulfur water is recommended as the optimal quenching medium for ST42 steel keris manufacturing, while used oil serves as a viable low-cost alternative.
