Abstract

Background: Allergic reactions are hypersensitivity responses characterized by an increase in eosinophil counts due to allergen exposure. Exposure to carbon dioxide (CO₂) from mosquito repellent smoke can act as a physical environmental stressor that triggers immune system dysfunction and allergic reactions. Recitation of the Qur’an is known to have a relaxing effect that can reduce stress, balance the nervous system, and potentially modulate the body’s immune response. Objective: This study aims to investigate the cellular immune response (eosinophils) in allergic reactions following murottal Exposure. Methods: This study employed a true experimental design with purposive sampling. The study sample consisted of 24 male Rattus norvegicus, divided into six groups: one control group and five treatment groups based on the frequency of murottal exposure (1–5 times daily). All groups were exposed to CO₂ from burning mosquito repellent as a physical environmental stressor. Eosinophil counts were measured using a hematology analyzer. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Levene’s test for homogeneity, and followed by the Mann-Whitney test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Eosinophil levels in the control group ranged from 0.0–0.2%, while those in the treatment groups varied between 0.0–2.0%. The highest increase was found in the two-time treatment group, with an eosinophil level of 2.0%. The normality test results indicated that the data were not normally distributed, with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05), while the homogeneity test indicated that the data were homogeneous, with a significance value of 0.372 (p>0.05). The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference between the control group and the treatment group, with a significance value of 0.654 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no effect of cellular immune response (eosinophils) on allergic reactions following murottal exposure.
