Abstract

Besides entertainment, song has other function that expresses the author’s intention. Connecting to the data “Watching The Wheel” that contains intended meaning, in this research entitled “The Reflection of John Lennon’s Psychology Condition in His Song “Watching The Wheel””, the researcher focuses on investigating the relationship between Lennon’s real life and the lyric of his song seen from psychoanalysis approach. The aim of this research is to identify the possible meaning of expression that Lennon used and the relationship between the expression and his real life seen from psychology perspective in his song “Watching The Wheel”. This research applies descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data of this research and the source of the data of the research are the whole stanzas in “Watching The Wheel” song.By applying the theory of psychoanalysis proposed by Freud and Krech and John Lennon’s life story by Edmonson, the researcher found that through“Watching The Wheel” song, Lennon wanted to explain what was being done by him when he was no longer interested in fame and dedicated himself to his family. And his explanation in “Watching The Wheel”revealed that he had pushed by death instinct and had reflected defense mechanism. It has proven by Freud that defense mechanism has some types. Defense mechanism in his song is reflected by him in the form of denial of reality, repression, reaction formation, direct aggression, and rationalization.
