Abstract
This study examines the intersectional representation of gender stereotypes in the characterization of Samantha Booke, a Black female character in the movie script of The Great Debaters (2007), written by Robert Eisele. Using a descriptive qualitative research design and Crenshaw's intersectionality theory, this study analyzes fourteen data extracts consisting of dialogue and stage directions that explicitly foreground Samantha's gender and racial positioning. The research addresses two questions: how gender stereotypes depict women in the 1930s setting as represented by Samantha Booke, and how these stereotypes intersect with race in shaping her characterization. The findings reveal four recurring patterns of gender stereotyping, namely exceptionalism, scrutinized credibility, reduction to physical appearance and domestic roles, and framing as a social risk. Furthermore, the analysis shows that gender stereotypes do not operate in isolation but intersect with race to produce compound marginalization, while simultaneously enabling Samantha's rhetorical resistance and intellectual agency. The study concludes that the script positions Samantha in a productive tension between subordination and empowerment, reflecting the lived reality of Black women intellectuals in 1930s America.

The Great Debaters (2007) karya Robert Eisele.
